The Mitsubishi company emerged from an iron foundry and shipyard founded by Dutchmen in 1857 in Dejima near Nagasaki. The company had several owners in its long history, was broken up and reunited several times. Today, marine and diesel engines are manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI).
